early work

From his student years, Richards' work evolved from seemingly simple, static, symmetrical works to complex organic, dynamic structures. He often started with a shape cut from a flat sheet of steel and, without a plan for the final form, explored the logic of non-representational form and gravity, removing all evidence of how the object was made. Transitions from one form to another within a single sculpture became a special focus. Although he had no desire to depict, the finished work might suggest figure, architecture, or landscape.
